The Art of Bricklaying: It’s More Than Just Construction

There’s something poetic in the artistry of bricklaying, something that can only be honed over many years and with lots of experience. What is bricklaying, exactly? Many people confuse the terms bricklayer and mason, but while related, they are two different things. The difference lies in skillset.

Bricklayers focus on construction using clay or concrete bricks, as well as blocks. Masons focus on construction involving stone, granite, marble, and other natural materials.

The Techniques of Bricklaying

Bricklaying is much more than just stacking bricks. In fact, it’s a craft that takes a keen eye for detail, patience, and a deep understanding of materials. The end result is a work of art that stands the test of time while elevating brickwork to an art form.

Seasoned bricklayers use a variety of techniques to achieve these works of art.

Preparation

Meticulous preparation forms the foundation of any bricklaying project, from ensuring a level site, to having the appropriate tools, to choosing the right mortar mix.

The First Course

The first row of bricks, called the course, sets the alignment for the wall or other structure being built, and must be precisely level and plumb. This accuracy requires the use of a string line and level. Proper attention to the first course in particular will set the stage for precision for later stages. If there is an inconsistency in the first course, the rest of the wall will be imperfect.

The Right Mortar

Mortar is what holds the bricks together – a glue if you will. It’s important to choose the right type and consistency of mortar so it can be mixed to the right thickness. The perfect mortar will lead to a strong bond. Weather conditions must be taken into account, as they can impact mortar drying times.

Strong Bonds

Bricklayers use a multitude of patterns to craft the strongest bonds between bricks, such as the Flemish bond or the running bond. The one they choose will depend on the unique structural requirements and desired aesthetics of the project.

Uniform Joints

Consistent joint size and appearance will result in a polished finish, plus it will ensure proper water runoff from the wall or other structure.

Tool Handling

Proficiency in tool handling is an essential skill for bricklayers. They essentially use levels, trowels, jointers, and other tools as extensions of their hands to result in a true piece of art. Precise use of tools will ensure perfect brick placement and alignment.

Brick Cutting and Shaping

Bricklayers have to know how to cut or shape bricks to fit specific design requirements, and they do this with the use of saws and chisels. Not only do they have to achieve the desired brick shapes, they have to do this without sacrificing structural integrity.

Curing and Cleaning

Once the bricks are laid, curing and cleaning are the next steps to address. With curing, the bricks have to remain moist for many days so the mortar can properly harden. Cleaning will remove excess mortar while maintaining appearance.
